Observing Jupiter and Saturn through poor skies (back in San Francisco)

Forecast predicted okay skies but seeing turned out pretty poor (smoke and/or marine layer and windy) and only few stars were visible with the naked eye.

Had a look at Jupiter and Saturn with the 12x70 while waiting for them to emerge from behind the neighbor's house to be visible from the telescope.

Did some imaging (camera + Barlow) followed by some observation through the zoom eyepiece (with and without Barlow). EQ platform worked pretty well keeping the planet in the frame.

Images through the camera turned out to be less clear or detailed than through the eye piece. Pictures with camera were pretty blurry and stacking in Lynkeos barely helped (see below).

Observations:

  • Jupiter: could see one band clearly maybe a second one and all 4 moons.
  • Saturn: could see rings (but not the Cassini division) and the moon Titan.
