More challenging targets with the 100mm

Tonight I wanted to try the 100mm against harder targets.

During the day, I velcroed the 2x40 to a cap following D's example.

I started the session by taking new dark, bias and flat frames (using the phone flashlight shining through a sheet of paper). The flats did not seem to do their jobs (remove the sensor smudge from stacks), maybe they were not correctly taken.

Overall, I was able to locate and image the targets but it was quite challenging at times. Also small or faint objects show less details than with the larger telescope as expected.

Some comments:

  • binoculars + laser is harder than using the finder scope when the target is not near any "good" stars,
  • the telescope is so light, I knocked it out of position more than once (even dropped it out of the platform when moving it),
  • the dovetail base for the laser start coming lose when moving the telescope by holding the laser,
  • the camera does not stay put (rotates) in the plastic focuser also today's the focus looked a bit off (but the camera was all the way in) maybe there was some dew.

Observations:

  • M31 Andromeda Galaxy, M32 and M110
  • M33 Triangulum Galaxy
  • NGC 772 Fiddlehead Galaxy - Aries - basically a smudge
  • C63 Helix Nebula - Aquarius - not image - knocked into the telescope and then it was too close to the house
  • C30, Deer Lick group and Stephan's Quintet - Pegasus - only C30 has a shape - was a real pain to locate
  • M74 Phantom Galaxy - Pisces
  • C16 Open Cluster - Lacerta
  • M39 Open Cluster - Cygnus
  • C19 Cocoon Nebula - Cygnus - took a while to locate
  • NGC 281 Pacman Nebula - Cassiopea
  • IC 1396 Elephant's Trunk Nebula - Cepheus - barely visible
  • M42 Great Orion Nebula and M43 De Mairan's Nebula - had to restart the stack a few times because of starlink satellites!
  • NGC 2204 Flame Nebula and IC 434 Horse head Nebula
